At Rustic Acres Maine Coons, the health and well-being of our cats and kittens are at the heart of our breeding program. We believe responsible breeding begins with thoughtful health screening and careful selection of our breeding cats.
Our breeding cats undergo comprehensive DNA genetic testing, including screening for known Maine Coon–associated conditions such as HCM, SMA, and PKDef. We carefully review these results when making breeding decisions to help reduce the risk of producing kittens affected by known inherited conditions.
In addition to DNA testing, we recognize that genetic screening alone does not replace cardiac evaluation. Our breeding cats also receive echocardiograms performed by appropriately trained veterinary professionals qualified to perform cardiac ultrasound, allowing the heart to be evaluated for structural changes associated with conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
We also incorporate additional health screening into our program, including veterinary examinations and orthopedic evaluations when appropriate. Health testing is an ongoing part of our commitment to making informed, responsible breeding decisions.
Every kitten receives age-appropriate veterinary care before leaving Rustic Acres, and our families receive the applicable health information and documentation for their kitten.
